Thanksgiving in Positano

Positano is known as the pearl city of the Amalfi Coast. It is a cliffside city along the Tyrrhenian Sea that is adorned with cute shoppes, restaurants and breathtaking views around every corner. It is a popular summer destination and one trip there, it is no surprise why. Echoing the words of a fellow alma mater of my high school, John Steinbeck, I must say that I agree with every word above. Waking up to an ocean view and sitting on the balcony of our hotel, I kept staring at the scene before me as though it was just a beautiful painting or a scene from a movie that you had suddenly become thankfully entrapped in. Absolutely unreal.

Now, the journey to such a magical city was quite the adventure. After much research before our trip, we realized that it was going to take several methods of transportation to get there and stay on budget. From Rome, we took the metro into Rome Termini where we took a train down to the city of Naples. From there, we transferred to a smaller train that took us from Naples to Sorrento. (which, by the way, that train was quite sketchy and notorious for pickpockets, so if  you are making this trip, be on guard). After arriving in the small town of Sorrento, we took a bus down to the Amalfi Coast where we were dropped off in Positano, and preceded to lug our suitcases down the cliff towards our hotel. It was a 7 hour journey, but so worth it in the end.

Since it was off season while we were in Positano, most of the restaurants were closed, so we had dinner at the same Ristorante both nights we were there. It was a charming place with twinkling lights and excellent customer service.

We happened to be in Positano on Thanksgiving Day, so we enjoyed sausage pizza for our thanksgiving feast and tiramisu for dessert. It wasn’t turkey and pumpkin pie, but hey, spending the day at the Amalfi Coast isn’t too shabby.

Since Positano is really small, we really only needed one day to see the whole town. If you’ve ever been to Capitola, CA, it’s basically the Italian version of this seaside getaway town. We enjoyed gelato in the afternoon and walks along the beach, while wandering through Positano’s many alleyways that had vespas and the cutest fiats around every corner.

In the afternoon, when it started to rain, we returned to our hotel for a cup of tea. Since the view was so gorgeous and we couldn’t resist staying outside, we had our tea while holding our umbrellas out on our hotel balcony. It was absolutely serene and the perfect way to relax and unwind from the busyness of life.

While I prefer vacationing and travelling amidst bustling streets, city lights and trips to museums and art galleries, I truly do love a getaway to seaside towns where it feels as though you’ve been removed from planet earth altogether. That is what it feels like in Positano, a seaside town that offers both beauty and serenity, a breathtaking place that has people coming from all around the world to experience it’s wonder.
